Making Hay in January
January is always a quiet month for me with Jaggerdesign. This year I decided to offer a free health check to all my clients with Squarespace websites, This was in part inspired by some recent improvements by Squarespace to their guidelines on how to make sure your website is set up to get optimum results in Google & search engines.
SEO is a bit of a dark art, if you try to research ways on how to get your website high up in the Google rankings or searches, you will find a barrage of conflicting and complicated information and everybody wants to charge you for their advice. Squarespace is theoretically designed to be used by everybody, so I was really pleased to see revised guidelines released at the end of last year, clearly outlining the correct methods to use with their websites for SEO.
Three of my clients took me up on my offer, and after looking at their analytics in detail one thing was clear, and I would like to share this with you… Blogging drives visitors to your site, every time!
As all three of these clients were already experimenting with blogging, it was clear to see that if you want to drive traffic to your website organically - that is without paying for advertising, writing a blog regularly will help.
Blogs can be easily optimised for SEO (search engine optimisation) by customising the URL for each blog, sounds complicated but its easily done.
If using a desktop computer log in to your Squarespace account, > pages > Your blog.
When you have added your copy (& checked for typos!) look for the 4 options at the top of the blog window, you will see ‘Options’, click here and where it says Post URL add your main target keywords for your blog, separated by hyphens. So my keywords for this Blog are: Squarespace-website-analytics-SEO-checklist
Also adding an Excerpt with your keyword terms in will help boost your post. Add a photo to the main body of your blog and when choosing an image make use of the caption in the ‘design’ menu by using more keywords, and select the ‘hide caption’ option, give the filename a name containing…. yes you guessed it more keywords! Don’t forget to add keywords to your tags and use your categories for future searches. Fill in the location and share to your social media via the social option. Following these rules every time your blog will see a rise in traffic to your website.
Did you know? Squarespace is now linked to my favourite source of free images, Unsplash. It is now super easy to find a fabulous image to accompany your blog, just click on 'Search for image' in the blog options menu and add your search term!
Over to you!
