Check my website: 6 things to check each month to make sure your website is working well for you.

It’s very important for a creative business owner to remember to check your own website regularly. Simple, regular checks on your Squarespace website can determine things like: Is your Instagram gallery still connected? are any of your prices out of date? Have you got new services to add?

Here are 6 quick things you should check when you log in to your account each month, it’s easy to just quickly sign in and take quick glance over everything, and most importantly while you are there - have a little Miss Marple at those analytics! They tell you lots of secrets, not just how many visits but, where those visitors are located -the towns and the cities, and more importantly, what is your bounce rate, if it’s high this means people are leaving pretty soon after finding you, which tells us you were not what they wanted to see, and maybe your keywording needs work. Little bits of information like this can be pointers to problems or changes to make improvements!

  1. Check your Instagram gallery - This happens regularly, the connection to your Instagram gallery drops, leaving your grid out of date- Pushing your Instagram posts to your website is an important way to make sure fresh content comes to your site, so don’t leave a broken connection for too long - I think it happens when there are updates to Instagram or Squarespace- which is quite often. If it has dropped you need to open another browser window - sign in to Instagram, go back to your Squarespace window disconnect and reconnect the gallery (click the gallery edit pencil). More instructions here

  2. Broken links. Just run through all the links on your website and make sure you don’t have any invalid links. If you do you will have a 404 message come up. It’s a good idea to make a custom 404 page and use this to automatically redirect traffic to a specific page like your home page if a link is broken. More info on how to do this here

  3. Update your content. Any new services you should update? A change of detail or an increase in prices, little changes to text can take no time at all. It’s important to make sure your pricing is all synchronised across your website and in any social platforms like Google for instance.

  4. It’s a good idea to test your forms periodically, fill out your own forms and make sure they come to your email when submitted. Little typos can often come into play here.

  5. Check the mobile view. You can switch your view from desktop to mobile easily on Squarespace, and it’s easy to forget to see what changes you make look like on mobile. So just remember to switch the view and have a quick gander, making sure nothing has gone squiffy.

  6. Your Analytics! I love analytics, you can find out so much valuable information, bounce rate too high? What are the popular pages? Traffic, Geography -which county has been visiting you the most and which town did that visitor come from? All this information that can be clues on what is working and what’s not. And really can just be intriguing, to be honest!
